Jo Mitchell

A native New Yorker, the artist has also lived in Washington DC, Virginia, West Virginia and Massachusetts. Jo has resided in Rabun County since 1989.

She graduated from Queens College, CUNY, and attended graduate school at Hunter College, NYC. She was awarded a graduate scholarship to the Brooklyn Museum School of Art.

Jo's style is Expressionist. Oil paint is her medium of choice, primarily for the ‘color attributes and translucent quality’. Color, motion, emotion, depth, balance and composition drive Jo’s work. It is in the process where things happen. Planning is required, to some degree, but too much creates contrivance, and "that is not what I want. Painting is creating, expressing and connecting."
